ABOUT THE PEN & INKS

Most of the pen and inks are studies in composition. Some are non-objective and others are representational at one level or another. For the most part the subject of the drawing is secondary to other concerns.

It is common for the viewer to find shapes and relationships that seem to be representations of one sort or another. In some cases this is intentional and in others it is likely to be of the viewers own imagination. This is much like finding representation in Rorschach ink blots or shapes in clouds. To me this is a healthy activity that should be encouraged. Any activity that stimulates the imagination should be encouraged. These impressions, however, may not have anything to do with the intent of the artist. In some cases the stimulation of imagination is the intent of the artist and forms have been created that are ambiguous and lend themselves to different interpretations.

Most of the pictures are what they are and require no explanation, so the explanations that are given may have nothing whatever to do with the drawing. In some cases the descriptions are intentionally misleading. Some explanations do give an indication of the intent of the artist but I have made an effort to make them oblique or obscure, much as a zen koan.

As time passes I hope to change the descriptions as a way of asserting dynamic tension. I know you can hardly wait.

Cheers...
